Last night’s 59th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony was definitely one for the books. From golden tributes to all-gold outfits, the bright lights of music’s biggest night shined on politically righteous performances, heartfelt acceptance speeches and Adele. Mostly Adele. The evening was exceptionally exciting for a few familiar faces at The Orchard, so we thought we’d give you a recap of our favorite moments.
Boy jazz wonder Jacob Collier took home two golden gramophone awards: One for Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella and another for Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals. Made famous by his mind-blowing loop videos on YouTube and taken under the wing of jazz icon Quincy Jones, Collier’s anticipated 2016 debut In My Room is something to behold. Congrats to Jacob and Membran for the much-deserved win!
Best New Artist and Best Urban Contemporary Album nominee Anderson .Paak took the stage with A Tribe Called Quest to perform a few numbers from the group’s 2016 banger We Got It From Here… Thank You 4 Your Service. Paak started behind the drums where he delivered a tight solo before transitioning into his verse on Tribe track “Movin Backwards.” Then Busta Rhymes stole the show, calling out “President Agent Orange” before leading .Paak and the Tribe into “We The People.” The show was electric and the talent on stage rivaled every other performance of the night.
Among the ceremony’s touching tributes to the many legends we’ve lost in the past year was a note about Sharon Jones from country music pioneer Dwight Yoakam. After declaring that Sharon’s work with her band The Dap Kings means that “she’ll never be forgotten,” Yoakam introduced Album of the Year nominee Sturgill Simpson who performed his song “All Around You” backed by The Dap Kings themselves. Simpson’s unmistakable baritone paired with big brass harmonies from The Dap Kings made for a warm and tasteful eulogy to Sharon. Check out a clip here.
