In celebration of Rising Women across all genres and styles of music, we’re shining a spotlight on Rising Women in Punk. From Punk Rock to Post Punk, these women are making their mark in the Punk scene.
NOBRO (Dine Alone)
Formed in Canada in 2014, NOBRO is a garage punk band that currently consists of vocalist Kathryn McCaughey, guitarist Karolane Carbonneau, keys/percussionist Lisandre Bourdages and drummer Sarah Dion. The band released its first demo in 2014, before eventually signing to Dine Alone in 2020 and releasing its debut record Set Your Pussy Free last year. They have over 5 million global streams.
The album was created in retaliation against last year’s Roe v. Wade decision, where the Supreme Court overturned the right to access an abortion in America. Set Your Pussy Free is a celebration of liberation and advocates for reproductive rights.
As written by The Spill Magazine, “Prioritizing an insatiably fun vibe, NOBRO has captured the nihilism and existentialism that feels inseparable from millennial culture in a world that is on fire.”
Jackie Hayes (Pack)
After two successful EPs, artist Jackie Hayes released her debut album Over & Over in 2022. Her new release, produced by Billy Lemons, highlights her established indie rock sound with raw and sparse production and guitar. Her angsty lyrics are emotional and personal — allowing the listener a glimpse into her valiant spirit.
Jordi (Dangerbird)
Singer-songwriter Jordi wrote and played every song on her debut rock album Sorry I’m Late. Jordi’s career in music began when she was drumming as a teenager in Los Angeles. Now, at 20 years old, she stands center stage.
Produced by Joe Reinhart, Sorry I’m Late features singles such as “Escape Route” which was #1 on KROQ’s ‘Local’s Only’ for three weeks.
As American Songwriter Magazine says, Jordi’s sound is “a glorious culmination of angst wrapped up in a rock ‘n’ roll, punk-infused, bass-heavy bow.”
rlyblonde (HDA)
Brooklyn based artist rlyblonde is making her musical debut after working as a creative director, photographer, and videographer for indie musicians around New York City.
Her music builds on themes from her previous work: identity, femininity, and storytelling. Her authentic, genre-bending rock and dreamy indie pop sound is visible on her latest single “Dumb Blonde.”
Sheer Mag
American rock band Sheer Mag has released their first album after signing with Third Man Records, Playing Favorites. Made up of Tina Halladay (vocals), Matt Palmer (guitar and keyboards), Kyle Seely (guitar) and Hart Seely (bass), who met in college at SUNY Purchase in 2014.
After a four year long break, Sheer Mag returned to the music scene with Playing Favorites. The album is a nod to ‘70s punk rock with a twinge of disco, funk, and pop. Sheer Mag’s fierce sound continues on with blazing guitar solos and emotional lyrics that create a complex and brilliant atmosphere.
The Paranoyds
The Paranoyds are a garage rock and punk band based in Los Angeles. Laila Hashemi (keys/vocals) and Lexi Funston (guitar/vocals) met in preschool, and formed the band in high school once they met Staz Lindes (bass/vocals) in ninth grade. David Ruiz (drummer) joined the band in 2015.
In 2020 he band was asked to play the Third Man Records SXSW showcase, which ultimately got canceled due to the pandemic, but led the band to sign with Third Man Records in 2021. Each of The Paranoyds songs have a unique sound — transforming into a mix of punk, fuzz-pop, and garage rock. Their debut album Carnage Bargain was released in 2019. Their sophomore album, Talk Talk Talk, released in the fall of 2022 and the newest EP titled I LIKE IT HERE was released last October.
