Presented by Telemundo on Thursday, October 25 at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, the Latin American Music Awards pays tribute to some of today’s most influential Latin artists.
Followed by six nominations, El Cartel Records artist Daddy Yankee received the Icon Award of the Year and Favorite Male Artist. Daddy Yankee has shown his “passion, power, and heart” through his Puerto Rican relief efforts. In 2017, Daddy Yankee donated $1M to relief aid following the disastrous Hurricane Maria. The money was split between Feeding America, The American Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, and other local organizations. This was on top of truckloads of supplies donated by fans at his various concerts and a donation of 200 gallons of diesel for a food bank to deliver food.
After receiving his well-deserved Icon Award of the Year award, the most listened to artist on Spotify, Daddy Yankee, joined the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra to put a spotlight on breast cancer survivors with a heart-wrenching performance of “Yo Contra Ti”. The song honored women who are fighting or who have overcome breast cancer. After talking to breast cancer survivors, Daddy Yankee was inspired to write the powerful, moving song. “The most important thing is that it’s a message that can inspire them and motivate them to go through their tests in life and trying to face cancer in a different way,” he said.
Ozuna (VP Records Corp/Dimelo Vi), who tallied up 9 nominations, took home Favorite Urban Artist, among two others. The win follows the biggest week for a Latin release and biggest streaming week ever for a Latin release with Aura, in addition to sold out tour dates.
The Latin American Music Awards each year honor some of Latin music’s most celebrated artists. The Orchard congratulates all of our partners and friends who were nominated and those who took home awards during Latin music’s special evening.
