Since 2000, the Latin Grammy Awards have celebrated the work of Latin recording artists and creators both domestically and internationally. The annual award show honors music recorded in Spanish and Portuguese and is selected by the Latin Recording Academy, a multinational association composed of industry professionals who represent all genres and creative disciplines. On September 28, this year’s 22nd annual Latin Grammy Awards nominations were announced, which includes a wide-ranging list of music creatives that reflect the diversity of Latin music and its worldwide power. Argentine producer Bizarrap’s work and artistry garnered him four well-deserved nominations, including top-tier categories like Producer of the Year and Best New Artist. The producer blew up with his ever-growing Bzrp Music Sessions and Bzrp Freestyle Sessions, which feature artists such as Nathy Peluso and Nicki Nicole and typically rake in millions of views in a matter of days. With each session, Bizarrap teams up with freestyling artists and creates videos that he mixes, produces, and edits the final pro, producing a track that blends his unique style with the artists’ sound. Each of his 38 sessions have quickly topped digital and streaming platforms, making him the most listened to Argentinian artist on Spotify worldwide. His Vol. 36 Bzrp Freestyle collaboration with Nathy Peluso has been nominated for this year’s Best Urban Fusion/Performance category.
Also nominated in four categories is Colombian rock band Diamante Eléctrico. Since forming in 2012, the band’s three members ––Juan Galeano, Daniel Álvarez and Andee Zeta-–have dominated the Latin Pop and Rock industry, releasing six studio albums and accumulating three Latin Grammy Awards. Diamante Eléctrico released their newest 11-track album this year, Mira Lo Que Me Hiciste Hacer, a soul and pop-infused album that has received a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Pop/Rock Best Pop/Rock Album this year. Multiple tracks from the Colombian band’s newest album are up for a Latin Grammy award this year, including “A Veces” for Best Pop/Rock Song and Song of the Year, as well as “Suéltame, Bogotá” for Record of the Year.
Colombian pop singer-songwriter Paula Arenas is honored with five Latin Grammy nominations this year for her newly released album, Mis Amores. The intimate collection of songs was written during the Covid-19 pandemic and follows Arena’s experience of pregnancy and early motherhood during the global lockdown. Mis Amores is up for this year’s Album of the Year award as well as Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album award, while the album’s lead track “A Tu Lado” is nominated for both Record of the Year and Song Of the Year.
